Most often we are caught up in the rigmarole of life and we go about our lives like machines doing one transaction after another. As a doctor I see so many patients everyday which makes me realize that sickness, death and birth have lost their abilities to affect me. Am I an automaton I wonder? The modern day hospitals have become business establishments. A patient gets treatment only when he has the money or is covered by insurance. It is the insurance and TPA that control the business along with the Pharma companies which lobby for promoting their products. All in all sometimes I feel that am missing something somewhere. Even in case of the patients they all seem to be focusing more on making money , paying premiums and running behind their career and expect doctors to fix things when something goes wrong with them.

I realized that the entire medical profession had changed when I happen to watch a movie by chance while traveling on the train. Thanks to my co-passenger, he was watching a movie on St. Padre Pio and have nothing else pressing upon my mind I happened to join him and watched the movie. I am thankful that I got the opportunity to watch this wonderful movie for it helped me change my attitude and beliefs and touch base with those values that are required to be guiding doctors, nurses as well as priests and pastors as well. We are given the chance to work with the lord to serve the poor, the needy and the sick. We are the fortunate ones selected and chosen for the job. Selfless service and love were the only two ingredients required in my profession. By the time I got out of train, I was a changed man.

It wasn't that I made a difference to the patients with my new found ideologies. But on the other hand I began to notice that I was changing as a human being. I began to notice life and other normal people and made friends with common people as fellow human beings and friends rather than doctor and patient. It was my good fortune that I could strike a friendship with our local postman who came to deliver post at my home every week. He had been doing this for several years. Though we all knew him, nobody bothered to befriend him for he was known to be one of those persons who was a little low in terms of intelligence. He was gullible and would get confused if you asked him too many things. I could see a simple straightforward, honest and loving soul in him and soon got talking to him as a good friend. He was my special friend and I was thankful for having been given a chance to know him for he was truly wonderful as a human being and so loving.

Having known him as a friend, I did get an invitation to his wedding and was pleasantly surprised and happy too. I did make it a point to be present at the wedding though it was a normal working day but I wouldn’t have missed it for anything in the world. My friend never took time off from work to go on a honey mood for delivering letters in time to everyone was his duty to god and he would never miss out on doing God’s work. However things were not alright with him and his wife and I could see that he was having some kind of problems which was evident from his face for I knew him well. So naturally as a doctor I knew that I could help. He was too simple to explain the problem he was facing and so I had to meet his wife to get to the bottom of the problem.
